Battle of the Bands

Hey y'all!! Its past my bed time but i made a commitment to participate in the Battle of the bands hosted by Stephen McCarthy at his Blog.

There are a lot of people who play along with these battles so go to Stephen's page and check out all the others.
Here's how it works. I am going to post the same song sung by two different bands or singers.
You comment with your favorite and then i'll let you know later who won the battle.  Fun huh?!
I only know a few that i wanted to enter the link with so it wont be an all the time gig for me.  Or will it? I may have so much fun i want to always play along!  Lets get through the first one.

The song is called Just Breathe.  It was written and released in 2009 by the band Pearl Jam.  I am really a big fan of this band and have always wanted to see them live but never have.  Eddie Vedder is the lead singer of this band and he's very involved in charities, politics, etc.  He uses his force for good and not evil though.  I think he's an awesome song writer as well as other guys in the band.

In 2012 , Willie Nelson and his son Lukas Nelson did their own version. Now this is so hard because i honestly love both versions and have them on my ipod and phone.  The video to me is Willie singing the song to his son and in the end he's preparing his son for when he's gone.  Thats how i interpreted the video when seeing it.  Listen to how much Lukas sounds like his dad. Crazy!
Here are the lyrics to the song:
"Just Breathe"

Yes, I understand that every life must end, uh-huh
As we sit alone, I know someday we must go, uh-huh
Oh I'm a lucky man, to count on both hands the ones I love
Some folks just have one, yeah, others, they've got none

Stay with me...
Let's just breathe...

Practiced all my sins, never gonna let me win, uh-huh
Under everything, just another human being, uh-huh
I don't wanna hurt, there's so much in this world to make me bleed

Stay with me
You're all I see...

Did I say that I need you?
Did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn't I'm a fool you see
No one knows this more than me

As I come clean...
I wonder everyday, as I look upon your face, uh-huh
Everything you gave
And nothing you would save, oh no

Nothing you would take
Everything you gave...

Did I say that I need you?
Oh, did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn't I'm a fool you see
No one knows this more than me
And I come clean, ah...

Nothing you would take
Everything you gave
Hold me til I die
Meet you on the other side...

Can you believe that July is here? Seriously where did June go? It seems like we went from May to July.   Have a great day!! I go home Thursday night and i'm ready for my own bed, my hubby and my dogs. Not in that order of course.

  1. Holli - WELCOME to BOTB!!!

Your battle is a tough choice for me. First, the song is not a favorite but hey that's nothing unusual. Vedder is okay but not quite the vocal I was expecting. Guess I'm still looking for the rock Pearl Jam style. On the flip side I do love the sound of Willie, but his son's voice kinda grates my nerves, and their harmony is not as tight as the Pearl Jam harmony. Dilemma time for me. Hang on... sound check # 3. On Wille's, I really love Mickey on harmonica, and the guitar solo is nice. Okay - I'm ready!

My vote goes to Willie and Lukas! Whew - good battle, Holli!

    1. I love being a part of the battle and I think I may just be hooked!! I will say that when I first heard Lukas I wasn't a fan but it actually grew on me pretty quickly. He is also a performer and has been playing a lot with Neil Young. I follow him on Instagram. LOL
I got you down for Willie!!

  2. Welcome to BOTB, Holli! ☺
That's a beautiful song and, although Willie's and Lukas' version was good, I have to go with Pearl Jam. Eddie's voice gives me chills. ♥

  3. It's fab having you on stage with BOTB, Holli! The song lyrics are moving. While I've heard it before, I never read the words until now ~ beautifully moving. I'm not a Willie Nelson fan, but I did enjoy his harmony with Lukas in this song, but it wasn't enough to sway me to go with the duo's cover. My vote clearly goes to Pearl Jam ~ nice battle!

  4. Hi, dear Holli! You are a trouper for staying up late to prepare this fabulous BOTB contest for us. I hope your bumps and bruises are healing by now.

"Just Breathe" is an extraordinary song. I never heard it before and thank you for presenting it today. I admire Eddie Vedder, his work for charitable causes and his activism, and I enjoyed his version of "Just Breathe." However, Willie and his son deliver the more powerful, heartfelt rendition. I tried to look away from their video in order to remain objective but kept sneaking a peek because the Nelsons are so compelling. I thoroughly enjoyed the performance by this talented father and son duo. Willie and Lukas Nelson get my vote, dear Holli, and thank you!

    1. Shady Shady, have I told you lately how much I love your comments? I do! Being a huge fan of Pearl Jam I was already in love with this song for years. Then being an equally huge fan of Willie, I was sooo excited to hear his version with his son Lukas. I remember hearing the first couple of chords and thinking wait a minute- this is THE JUST BREATHE song by PJ. The song together puts a different meaning when sung as a duet and by duet of father and son- Bonus!
I have your vote down for Willie!! Have a great July 4th weekend dear Shady

  5. Welcome to BOTB! Just Breathe is one of my most favorite songs. It has special meaning to me and it takes me to a place on memory lane where I remember a very dear friend who has been gone from us for the past 2 1/2 years. The song always brings a tear to my eye in her remembrance. That being said - my vote goes to Pearl Jam.

    1. Hi Mary, thanks for the welcome. I am really having fun with this battle. I so love this song . I love it by both artists because they're both so genuine and sincere. I am so sorry about your friend. Nothing like music and special songs to bring back memories.
Thank you for voting and I've got you down for Pearl Jam.

  6. Oh, man, you weren't kidding about this being a tough one :D I'd never heard the Nelson version before, so I thought I was looking at an easy choice--who could possibly ever improve on a Pearl Jam original, right? Oh, boy. And then the video you used gave me a notice: "Uploader has not made this content available in your country"--which is not weird at all, since most people can't find Curaçao on a map :D So I looked for an "available" version in YouTube. Couldn't find the actual video, just the music, but even so it blew me away. Had to go back and listen to both again. In the end, I had to resort to nitpickery to make a decision.

I'm going with Pearl Jam. The Nelson version has an added depth, given by the two voices (so similar--wow!) *and* the harmonica, which makes it gorgeous. But--and maybe this is because I missed seeing the father-son interaction in the video--the song's sense, to me, is best conveyed through Eddie's single voice. The aloneness, so to speak, comes through clearer to me in the original. (And there's a dog in that video. I told you, nitpickery :D )

Fantastic face-off, Holly. I'm a fan :) (And today is my first BoTB, too--so kudos, fellow novice!)

    1. How fun that were both BOTB virgins together. LOL!!! Sometimes it does have to come down to the nitpickery to come to a decision. I am with you when there is a dog in a video for sure. I'm sorry the video wouldn't work for you to see Willie and Lukas. It really adds a special touch.
Thanks so much for your vote and stopping by!! I 've got you down for Pearl Jam.

  9. HOLLI ~
Nice to have you with us at BOTB!

I wasn't familiar with this song, however, it was an easy decision for me. Like Dixie Polka said, I am a Willie Nelson fan but I didn't really care for his son's voice - something about it didn't settle right with me.

On the other hand, I DO NOT LIKE Eddie Vedder whatsoever. I know he and his band had/have fans, but as a singer, I think he's a poseur, and he has probably the worst stage presence I've ever seen. (During instrumental breaks, I've actually seen him playing "air guitar" - how embarrassing for a supposedly professional musician. The worst thing that ever happened to Tom Petty was Eddie! Ha!)

So, anyway, WILLIE gets my vote with ease.
Thanks for joining us BOTBers and I hope you enjoy it.

I've got you down for Pearl Jam.
Do you like country music? I'm asking because its not for everyone. I have some friends that would say PJ simply because theyre not country. Have a great day.

    2. Well, I'm not a BIG country fan. But I've never let that stop me from voting for country songs in the past. In fact there are a few country artist I enjoy a lot.
In short - It's not my go-to preference, but I will listen to country if I"m in the mood.

  11. I've never been a Pearl Jam fan, as a matter of fact they make me kind of nuts, and I really don't like Eddie Vedder and his vocal style. Now having said all of that, this is the first time I've heard this song and it's not too bad.

BUT, I vote Willie and Lucas by a country mile. I'm a big Willie fan and was surprised to never have heard this song. I really like it. I think considering there is a 55 year age spread between willie and Lucas, you might be right about your intrepertation of this song/video.

Nice song, nice BATTLE. Welcome Holli!

Got you down for Willie and Lukas. Thanks for voting. :)

  12. This is a really good first battle Holli. I've never heard this song before, but I really like it. Really like it!

Both versions are appealing. I always like me some Willie Nelson, but it turns out I'm not crazy about his son's voice. It might grow on me with time, though. However, I really liked Eddie's take on this song (and his voice was appealing), so cast one for Eddie Vedder or Pearl Jam. Whatever.

    I'm so tired.....!!!

I'm having so much fun with this battle and I'm glad you really like the song. I do too and I'm glad to share it with those who aren't familiar with it.
I can tell you that when I first heard Lukas I felt the same way. The next time I heard him I was already used to him because he sounds so dang much like his dad!
I've got you down for the original singer Eddie/ pearl Jam. Have fun girlie!

  13. I have not heard this song either and it is so sweet. This is a tough one for me because both do the song justice but in their own style. I think I will go with Pearl Jam. He puts so much heart into it and I like his voice a tad better

    1. Got you down for Willie!! Thanks for your vote. I love that Lukas sounds like Willie because its like carrying the torch. In fact, Waylon's son Shooter and Lukas are singing in a Highwaymen concert coming up next week in Austin. Its huge and already sold out with several other performers. Its on a weekday and I cant make it.

  15. Thank goodness Lukas sounds like his dad! Willie is one of my favorite singers, has been since I first heard him On The Road Again in his Winnebago. He still has a great range to his voice. Pearl Jam does a very good job, but I have to stick with Willie.

    Welcome to the battles :)

  17. I'm giving this one to Willie and Lukas Nelson. I like their duet. Maybe I'm biased because I've always liked Willie. He's especially popular here in Austin, Texas and he performs every year out in Luckenback. One of these days I'm going to get myself out there for his show. One of these days...

  18. This one's a doozy! Nice job.

Vedder does an impeccable job with the song and I felt certain that my vote would go to him until I listened to the Nelsons. They do a wonderful interpretation of the song and it fits them so well.

I'm going with Willie and Lukas.
