Battle of the bands- Love Song

Um Hm, i bet you thought i forgot didnt you! The Battles are always on the 1st and the 15th.  I have been out all day long enjoying my weekend.  Todd is grilling dinner and i am making my post.  Hey, better that late never right?
Anywho, I will say this now- this is only my 3rd time to be in the battle.  Its been going on for years and many people are in the battle. I will most likely almost definitely be posting a duplicate of an early battle.

My battle this time is the Love Song originally by The Cure.  The Cure was very popular in the 80's and were considered an alternative rock band with goth added in.  I love them! I wore their cassettes out when i was in high school and college.
Here is the original:

The battle is between another rock band that was more around in the late 90's and early 2000's. The band is 311 ( pronounced three eleven  NOT three one one).   They released their cover of this back in 2009.

Another popular band called Imagine Dragons did a cover for a publicity appearance on the Biz.

This song is not part of the battle well unless you insist on voting on it but it was also covered by the popular Adele.

There have been quite a few bands who have done the song but these are the ones that have stood out to me.  So vote between 311 and Imagine Dragons.  I will post the winner on the 6th or 7th.   Hope you're having a great day yall!!!

  1. Hi, Holli! I just logged on and found your battle. Sorry I'm late getting here.

"Lovesong" is a very pretty composition and I enjoyed all four versions presented here including the one by Adele. In the battle between 311 and Imagine Dragons I give the edge to 311 because I preferred their clean alt rock approach to the material. The Imagine Dragons version achieves a slightly more emo sound with mellow lead vocal, acoustic guitar and violin. I prefer an edgier style of rock.

    411: Shady votes for 311.

Thank you very much, dear friend Holli, for presenting all these evenly matched versions of an ear pleasing song!

  2. Oh gosh you made this one hard. I am not really a big fan of this genre of music but I listened to all four versions and found that I liked them all. I wish I could vote for Adele because she is my favorite of the four. But since she wasn't one of your choices I am going to put my vote on 311. I just liked the sound best!

    1. Thanks sweet Paula for your vote!! I post a lot of different kinds of music. Stay with me and I'm sure to post something from a genre you do like. Adele actually recorded her version and had it on her album. She does a great version for sure.
I got your vote down for 311.

  3. These are both really good, and it's hard to choose, but I'll go with Imagine Dragons by a hair; I just like their sound a little better.

  4. Both contenders were good, but given my druthers, I'd choose Adele. Okay, since she's not in contention, please give my vote to Imagine Dragons. :) There was something about the vocals that moved me the most.

  5. I used to listen to a lot of Cure back in the 80's and 90's. Great band. I have this song in my line up of future bands and might have one of these versions as a contender--I don't quite recall since there were so many versions I had listened to. I guess I'll still use it.

Both of these versions are outstanding. I like the reggae feel a bit less than the version done by the Dragons. And Imagine Dragons has the violin which cinches this contest for me.

My vote goes for Imagine Dragons.

  6. First, I want to say that this is one of my "favoritest" songs. So many memories attached to this song!

I really wish you hadn't posted the version by Adele, because I would vote for it given the chance. Since she isn't in the running, I vote for Imagine Dragons. I liked the violin in the song, plus the fact that they didn't try to sing it exactly like The Cure. 311 sounded good, but they didn't do anything to make the song theirs.

Great battle and thanks for the memories!

    1. Robin, my apologies for throwing in Adele. From the votes, she has 3 votes so far if she had been included.
Got you down for the dragons....

  7. Click! That was the sound of me deleting a future battle of the bands, ha ha. My son loves The Cure as much as I do and he kept saying "Do Love Song! Do Love Song!" I may accidentally do a "repeat" but I will not do it intentionally. There's just too many great songs out there!

But once again, sister - clone!

Now, about your battle. I listened to 311 and I thought, "whoop...there it is." Lovely, very reminiscent of original. What could be wrong with that? I almost voted for them right off the bat.

But then I heard Imagine Dragons - VOTE VOTE VOTE. Love it; the more acoustic sound is great and the lone string player...perfect. That's my pick, for sure!

    Great battle, Holli!

  9. Out of the two you present, I'd vote for 311. Unless you DO make Adele a part of the mix. Because I adore her singing and would rather vote for her.
As for duplicating songs, don't worry about it. I purposely did a song this battle that I KNOW was already covered. But the point is, I used two different artists than what was presented before. So it makes it a brand new battle. Love your battle for today. Not one I personally recall battling on yet.

    1. Thanks Jeffrey- got your vote down for 311. Sorry for adding to the confusion and throwing in the Adele song. She would have been a strong contender because many have mentioned her.

  10. Hi, HOLLI!!!
    Welcome back!

OK... gotta get my snark outta the way first. (It wouldn't be me without a shot o' snark, right? And, surely, you always want the REAL ME in your comment sections, right? Uh... right?)

Snark: I'm trying to figure out which was more imaginative, the song title or its lyrics. Tom Waits is shaking in his boots knowing that there are lyrics like that out there, creeping up on his legacy. Ha! Sorry. I'm a jerk and I'll always be the first to say it.

OK, the title and the lyrics aren't going to win any Grammy for "Off-The-Charts Imagination", but the melody was pleasant enough. [Don't mind me. I'm notorious - even infamous - for giving too-honest-opinions.]

I'd never heard this song before and only played the two BOTB contenders, not the original or the Adele cover.

I did kind of like the 311 version, primarily because I enjoyed the beat the drummer was laying down, and I thought I'd vote for that one. But as others said, the violin in the IMAGINE DRAGONS version really added a nice element, and also added a "romantic" touch that this otherwise-too-basic (in my own personal opinion) song needed to really make it stand out.

So, all-in-all, a nice tune, with the violin being the essential element that it called for.

    1. Hi Stephen- snark and honesty is ALWAYS WELCOMED and appreciated here!!!!
I am surprised you never heard this song before. It gets lots of airtime on the radio still. 311 has the closest to the original version.
Got your vote for the Imagine Dragons.

  14. Never heard 311 do a song that slow, but I thought it was pretty good. ID was a little too qualuude-y for me. And I think I've heard enough Adele for the next year or two.
