Battle of the Bands- Everybody Hurts

I have been MIA.  Its not by choice. I have really wanted to blog more but i have too much going on right now. I am busy at work and on a personal note, i've been trying to be there for a dear friend as her husband was in his final stages of life this week. He passed away last night.  I'll talk more about it another day because i just cant right now.  I do have a battle though and the song is fitting.

Everybody Hurts is originally written and sung by the band R.E.M.  I am a big fan of R.E.M and the lead singer Michael Stipe.  I have posted their songs more than a few times on my blog.
Here is the original:

My battle begins with Joe Cocker.  Joe Cocker has had a list of hits and my favorites were  With a Little help from my friends,  and You can keep your hat on.  He did a cover of this song Everybody Hurts.   Rest in Peace  Joe.  He passed last year in December 2014.

The next in the battle is David Archuleta.  He is a very talented singer and got recognized more when he was on the show American Idol.
Here is his version of Everybody hurts :

So pick between Joe or David and at least i have to be back for sure next week for the results right?! I will be back. I havent even shared my trip to Montana with yall yet and its been 2 weeks ago.  Please know that i will comment on your blogs when i can and i really do miss yall.

Here are the other battles and please go vote at theirs. I always learn more about music during these battles.

  1. Sorry about your friend's loss. This is indeed an appropriate song for the time.

Kind of a tough choice since both versions have some merit.

Cocker's version actually sounds like it has a lot of hurt in it. As typical I have a difficult time getting past Cocker's vocals. I like the instrumental break a lot.

Archuleta's voice is a bit high pitched for me at times, but aesthetically speaking I think his version wins me over more. I'm wavering on this choice, but I'm going to go with Joe Cocker's version for more feeling and a bit more innovative arrangement.

  2. Oh, sweet friend, I'm so sorry for your friend's loss and I'm sending prayers and love to you right now (feel it?).

David Archuleta gets my vote - love that voice! I'm also a Joe Cocker fan but the tone of the original was perfect and DA's version is in that same vein. Loved the video, too.

    Hugs!

  4. Holli,

Sometimes I think we're two halves of the same person. Seriously, our taste in music is soooo similar. I love REM. I saw them in concert back in 2004 (I think). It was when I was married. My ex loved to go to concerts, and we went to tons. That was one I particularly enjoyed, though.

Everybody Hurts is a song I can listen to on a loop when I'm depressed. I suppose we all have our ways of "working it out."

Joe Cocker: Not a fan of his music, but I *love* You Can Leave Your Hat On. I also like his With A Little Help From My Friends. And that's about all I Really like of his songs. I wasn't crazy about his take on this one. He's no Michael Stipe!

I just started the David Archuleta video. Already so much better and we're not even a minute in. So, this is an easy vote for him.

I'm sorry about your friend's loss. I'll be praying for you and her. Be well, my friend.

    1. Robin, I have often thought we have tons in common from our musical tastes. I love it!
I appreciate your prayers and they are much needed this week. My friend has also lost her mom this year so having 2 huge losses is just too much. Its gut wrenching.

I have your vote down for David. Thanks for the vote.

  5. Hi, dear Holli! I'm very sorry you're not back here hootin' and hollerin' just yet. I know that you were ill and I hope at least that hurdle is behind you now. I know you were and will continue to be a great comfort to your friend at this sad time in her life. Bless you!

David A. is an outstanding singer. That can't be denied. However, the old schooler in me loves the inimitable Joe Cocker. (Correction - John Belushi DID imitate him, and quite well.) I love the raw power and energy wrought by Cocker on this and his numerous other fine recordings. I vote for one of the great voices of my generation, a voice now silent, Joe Cocker.

I have your vote down for Joe. I do like both versions and haven't voted yet in any of my battles. I like Joe's version and I like David's video.

  7. Definitely Joe Cocker. This song is perfect for him. I even like it better than the original, although I confess I don't much like my neighbors vfrom Athens, Georgia.

  8. Holli, I saw somewhere recently that Joe Cocker passed away and was shocked that I just found that out. I'm not sure how I missed the news in December. Oh well...David Archuleta is a good singer, but his voice is too high to suit my taste. I'm a big fan of Joe Cocker and I so love his gritty vocals, so Cocker steals my vote hands down. Nice battle.

    1. Hi Cathy, thanks for the encouragement by saying nice battle!! I appreciate that.
David's voice is high but when I listened to the original again by REM, Michael's is pretty high too so I think they resemble the most. Joe has his unique sound which made the song his own. I liked both and have you down for Joe.

  9. So sorry for your loss. Your friend is lucky to have you.
Re: your battle, I'm going to give my vote to Joe Cocker. Even though David Archuleta's version is really good, I like Joe's voice better.

I have your vote down for Joe. David was winning for a while but Joe is gaining much speed.

  10. Last night after I prepared my BOTB, I got lost in the 'black hole' of Youtube. I clicked on a tab that was titled 'the 10 saddest songs'. This one was #2. It was actually an anti-suicide song and how appropriate. I never much cared for the original by REM, but the two versions you have used here are superb. I like each for different reasons.

I think I'll go for Joe Cocker. I'm not a big fan of his, but some songs are made for his gravelly voice and this one works perfectly. David's is really nice, but there seems to be a bit more melancholy in Cocker's tone.

Sorry to hear that you are going through a touch time with your friend, but how heartwarming to know that you are the type of friend to be there with her. That is what gets a person through these saddest of losses.

  11. Holli - I hope you'll take care of yourself, so you can continue support for your friend. Prayers for you and your friend's family.

Joe vs David is a tough a pairing but a good one. David has a lovely voice and the background symphony is very appealing. That said, I think the video got me. I became so interested in it, I lost track of the song, and replayed it. I just couldn't stay with it.

On the other hand, Joe grabbed my attention because I 'feel' his vocals. (Don't ask). The music was so special, and took me back to older musical themes (if themes is even the right word, I don't know.) I'm thinking to buy his last CD. So many songs have appealed to me.

My vote is for Joe Cocker. Thank you.

  12. I was going to write that I would vote for almost anyone against Joe Cocker, but then the song started, and I heard that familiar voice. It was so much more beautiful than I remembered. I vote for Joe Cocker. David Archuleta's voice is too sweet for my taste.

    Love,

    3. Okay, on to the vote... I have to admit, these are two artists I wouldn't have listened to on my own. Never liked Cocker (yeah, I know, send the torches and pitchforks), and Archuleta shoulda got knocked out in the semi-s of American Idol if Lambert hadn't douched up his last song. Everytime I listen to Archuelta, I hear Walt Disney screaming at me. I gotta give this one to Joe. He did less of the stuff I can't stand than DA did.

  14. I'm so sorry for your friend's loss.It must be hard on you as well, but it's great that you can be there for her. Good song choice, for the circumstances.
I remember David from American Idol. His voice didn't appeal to me then and it still doesn't. Joe Cocker. on the other hand, has that grittiness and raspiness I love, so my vote goes to him. I also preferred the musical arrangement of his version.

  15. A perfect song to fit your life at this time. My condolences.

Joe Cocker is an awesome singer, and he is missed in the musical world. There are some songs he just doesn't do very well. This is one that suits his voice. But David's clear steady tenor, and that matching piano just made me cry. David gets my vote.
