Battle of the Bands- Whiskey in the Jar

Top of the morning to ya!!  I'm all caught up in the Irish for today's battle.  My song is Whiskey in the Jar .  This song is a very popular and traditional Irish song and the exact origin of the song is unknown.  It was released in the 60's by an Irish folk band The Dubliners and thats when it first got wide exposure.  Then in the 70's it was released by Irish rock band Thin Lizzy.   Fast forward to 1998 and a very popular American rock band Metallica released the song and introduced it to a larger rock audience.

Here is the The Dubliners who are not part of the battle.

I just saw a documentary on Thin Lizzy over the weekend and they had very interesting story. The lead singer got very sick with Hepatitis at the very height of their career and the tour was cancelled.
Here they are:

Here is the version by Metallica.  I have always liked their version!!

Now the battle is between a band that formed here in Dallas and have been around since 1996.  I have seen them live many times and i should buy their CD/DVD.  They were also nominated for a grammy in 2001.  The band is  The Killdares  . This was filmed at The Granada Theater which is also here in Dallas that have great concerts.

The next band is called Celtic Thunder.  This band formed in 2007 and have released several albums. This cover was released on their Heritage album.

So now i need you to vote between the Kiddares or Celtic Thunder.  I'll have results for you next week.  Also please go see the rest of the battles.  I always love hearing new songs or old songs done differently.

more Battle of the Bands fun, check out the other BOTB bloggers to vote on their battles:

  1. Hi, dear Holli! It starts with a great song and "Whiskey in the Jar" is a great song. I enjoyed all versions presented. The two competing versions are both excellent and that makes the voting decision extra tough. The handsome guys who front Celtic Thunder are talented and charismatic. They travel across the stage telling the story and effectively selling the song. However, in my mind, the slight edge goes to the Killdares because the violin is prominently featured and the lead vocalist has a robust voice and delivers the song in a more authentic Irish folk style similar to the old Dubliners' version. The Killdares kill and they get my vote. Thanks, Holli!

    1. Thanks Sir Shadester for being my first to vote on this battle. I am so happy that you liked both versions and I am extra happy that you liked our own from Dallas The Killdares. They are very entertaining and I'm proud that they have done well. Got your vote down for Killdares. I may even vote on this battle. I've never voted on my own battles so we will see....

  2. I believe this song has been used on a previous BOTB post, but you came up with some good alternative versions.

The 3 minute intro on the version by the Killdares was a bit overkill I dare say. They did the song itself justice though. Celtic Thunder leaned more toward the Thin Lizzy version and I really like that group's version.

I'm a big fan of violin but I didn't particularly get excited about the Killdare version whereas I found the Celtic Thunder version to be pretty rousing.

    I vote for Celtic Thunder.

    1. Hey Arlee, Thank you for your vote towards Celtic Thunder. I don't doubt that I've mimicked a previous battle. Its getting hard not to. I almost added a warning about the long intro to the Killdares but I didn't want to already sway someones opinion.
      Have a great weekend!

  3. I love this song, and I love Irish music. I've actually seen Celtic Thunder in concert. They really put on a good show. But I agree with you, I need to get the CD from Killdares, they put on a good show too. I was really into their version of the song. Put me down for Killdares. Thanks. :)

    1. WOW I am so surprised that you went with the Killdares after being a fan of Celtic Thunder and even seeing them live. That makes me happy!! Thanks for stopping by and voting and not being lazy on your comment. wink wink!

    2. Actually, I was at a Diana Krall concert (of course) and there was a problem with the AC in the middle of Summer. They gave everyone free tickets to a future show. I chose the Celtic Thunder. So I enjoyed it, but there was no guarantee I was going to purchase those tickets. But I'm so glad I went.

  4. Well, you've pulled out two bands I've never heard of before today!

The Kildares. I wasn't crazy about the violin intro. The song was infinitely better after we got through that bit of business. However, I still had difficulty understanding the lyrics. Interesting note: the lower a person sings the more time it takes to push the sounds out. So, if the song is fast a bass voice will have to work much harder to keep the pace. I think that may have been some of the issue here, as some of the lyrics were garbled.

Celtic Thunder. First, just let me say this: I don't know why, but I love me a man in a kilt. (I've always been partial to celtic sounding music and love reading fiction that takes place in Scotland.) Are those young men twins? If not, I bet they're brothers. They look and sound very much alike, which is a great thing in a band. The harmonizing is always better. I really liked this version. This is a STORY song, and I understood the story and liked the way they delivered it.

Count an enthusiastic vote for Celtic Thunder.

    1. YAY! I got an enthusiastic vote down for Celtic Thunder. I have to agree with you on the men in kilts. I also think about Braveheart. All that riding and fighting in a kilt.
Not sure if the guys in the band are brothers or not. I should check....

  5. Another great battle! I love this song, especially Metallica's version. ☺
These covers are new to me. Thanks for the introduction. They were both good, and The Kildare's vocalist is awesome, but, I preferred the overall pacing and arrangement of Celtic Thunder's version. Put me down for Celtic Thunder.

  6. Hey Holli, I didn't know you were in Dallas! I'm in Austin. :)
Great battle. I know Thin Lizzy and Metallica but I wasn't familiar with their versions of the song so that was neat. As for the battle, I really like Celtic Thunder. Loved their sound. So they get my vote. Their version is just so much cleaner. I'm going to have to check out more of their music...

  7. Awesome battle! I had a hard time choosing because Celtic Thunder sounds so cool, but having just found out (through your post) the song was originally an Irish song, I really have to give my vote to The Kildare! Plus, that lady on the fiddle is SO killing it!

  8. Oh, this was a tough one again.

First of all, I love violin (my son has played for ten years...though not lately, ha ha, since he is "casted") and I was totally digging that version by the Killdares.

Celtic Thunder surprised me, though. Their version had a country vibe to it. I could almost see Keith Urban doing that song. Love it, too!

    ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHH....SO CLOSE....WHAT TO DO....

Dang it, I have to give it to The Killdares. Keepin' it Irish!

You outdid yourself this time, girlfriend. Way to go!

    1. The Killdares keep it as close as anyone can get to the Irish. They are such a fun band to watch live. I could TOTALLY see Keith Urban doing a country version of this song. He's so dang cute though and good, he could see dang near anything. LOL
I have your vote for the Dallas band!!

  13. HOLLI ~
    Excellent, excellent Battle here!

First, I'll tell you that although I no longer like most of the music I loved as a teenager, for a couple years in my teenage period, THIN LIZZY was my favorite band and I saw them perform live 2 or 3 times. They put on a really high-energy show. One of the places I saw them was The Pasadena Civic Center, or something like that. (Long time ago, back in the '70s, and my memory isn't what it used to be.) But it was definitely in Pasadena, in a very small auditorium. They rocked, and I was close enough I could have spit on Phil Lynott (if I were an asshole, which I wasn't... back then :o)

And today, I STILL think their album 'BAD REPUTATION' is one of the very, very best in the Hard Rock category. I played that LP to death! And that title track still completely kicks ass!!! (There was one song where my needle always got stuck and played the same line of lyric over and over until I moved the needle. To this day, I can listen to that song and when it gets to that one line, my mind will hear it playing over and over and over and...)

Both of these versions were REALLY GOOD! And that's why this was such an excellent Battle. But I definitely liked THE KILLDARES better - they totally killed it! And I'm surprised that a couple of voters dinged them for the violin intro. That was probably my favorite part of the arrangement! It really added a great new element to the song and gave the listener (this listener, anyway) a sense of "anticipation".

    1. That is so cool that you were that close to Phil Lynott. What an interesting life he had. My parents were fans of Thin Lizzy and had their albums. Its funny how you get so used to the way you hear something over and over like the broken needle!
I'm glad you liked my battle and I have your vote down for The Killdares.

  17. I can't vote for Metallica? Bummer. It was a tough enough battle between Thin Lizzy and Metallica, and I would have given my vote to Metallica just cuz I love them.

Gotta tell ya though, I adore Kiddare. At first I was afraid they weren't going to sing, but when he did, it was awesome. Damn, that girl sure can play the violin. Bet her fiddlin' is just as awesome. Celtic Thunder has a good sound; but Kiddare blew this one out of the water. I think I liked it better than Metallica, though its good the battle wasn't those two :)

  18. NOOOOOOO! Blogger ate my comment :( Okay, I basically said that I loved this battle, loved both renditions, and although I'm tempted to vote for Celtic Thunder, being a fan of the original (okay, the Thin Lizzy "original", haha—and the amaaaaaazing Metallica cover), I think I need to give a kudos vote to the Killdares for sheer innovation and creativity... So, yes, a vote for the Killdares :)

    Excellent battle, Holli!

  19. I wasn't going to vote for The Killdares since the intro was a bit grandiose. Sounded it great and the girl has talent. But then I listened to the Celtic Thunder version but The Killdares was simply better sounding. My vote for The Killdares!
