BOTB - Drive

Good morning y'all! Happy Tuesday to all of you.  It's that time again for the Battle of the Bands. I've missed the last 3 but I'm back today!! As always I feel the need to always start with my disclaimer , I have no doubt that my battle hasn't already been done .
OK so the song I'm using today is Drive originally sung by The Cars. This single came off the album Heartbeat City in 1984.  The whole album is awesome.
Here's the original :
The Battle begins with a band called the Deftones.
I think I may have posted them before a while ago but not in a battle. They're a band from California back in the late 80's. Their music is more alternative metal.  The lead singer is Chino and I like his voice.
Here is their version :

The next is the reggae version sung by Ziggy Marley. If you've ever seen the movie 50 First Dates, then you might have heard this song towards the end of movie.
It's a different sound but I like it a lot!
So here's this one:

So the Battle is between Deftones or Ziggy. Which one do you like best?

Go check out the others and vote on their battles.

  1. Hi, dear Holli!

I am happy to see you participating in another band battle, dear friend. I hope it means that you are in better spirits these days.

How well I remember the slick video produced for "Drive" by the Cars. It was heavily requested by viewers of the MTV station where I worked. The song and vid are reminders of the last great decade, the New Wave Eighties, and all those cool Brat Pack movies.

This is a great contest. I enjoyed the quality of Ziggy's vocals, the organ and other elements of his recording but, truth be told, I have never been a big fan of reggae. On the other hand I very much enjoyed the alt rock sound of contender #1 The Deftones. In fact, the more I listened, the better I liked it. Therefore, my vote goes to The Deftones.

    Thank you, dear friend Holli!

    1. Shadester- Thank you for your sweet comments and support on my posts. They mean so much. I'm sorry that it seems our friendship is too new for you to see me combust and fall to pieces so soon. I'm working on it- really I am.
The Cars were huge during the MTV years for sure. I remember watching all of them. I have your vote for the Deftones and glad you liked them.

  2. Tough one, Holli... I really like Marley's version! But I'm in love with the Deftones. Sorry, Ziggy. Yes, my vote for the Deftones, please.

    Very cool battle!

  3. Welcome back!

OK, I didn't really even need to listen to the Marley version. It was alright, but I knew my choice before even listening to anything. Deftones is in my top five favorite bands ever. So easy peasy, this :)

    Vote: Deftones! Great cover!

  4. This is a hard one... they're both pretty good. I'm going with the Deftones because I like the vocal better, but this does work as a reggae tune.

  5. Hey Holli! Glad you're back, girl (smile).Like John said, it definitely works as reggae, but I too, enjoyed Deftones more. (Just in a mood, I suppose.) Give them my vote.

  6. Y'know, I just didn't hear a lot to differentiate the two for me. Prolly because this was far from one of my favorites from Ocasek and Co. I guess just on the basis that I had no expectations on the Deftones but felt kinda let down by Ziggy, I'll vote Deftones.

    1. Thanks Chris. On subject of Ocasek- wasn't it crazy that he married that super model Paulina and stayed married for a long time? I did hear they divorced a while back though. Vote for the Deftones.

  7. Whoops! HOLLI, I screwed up! I thought you had quit participating in BOTB because you hadn't posted a Battle in so long, with no mention of it. My mistake for ASSuming! And I will immediately re-add links to your blog on my blog. Sorry 'bout that.

In this contest, I will vote for ZIGGY. I felt the Deftones just sounded too much like The Cars. Ziggy had that Reggae rhythm in the background which added something new to the mix.

Truthfully, I really didn't greatly like anything that The Cars did after their first album. To me, they hit their peak and then fizzled after just that one album, even though I know they had several big hits after their debut. Well, my taste in music changed in the very early '80s. But I'll still crank up 'Just What I Needed' and 'Good Times Roll' when I hear them on the Classic Rock radio station.

  11. I don't recall this song being used before. But I think it was a great battle. Loved all the songs provided. I've never been big on reggae but that version was nice. However, I still have to go with Deftones. I like their performance of the song so much better. It was enjoyable and pretty close to the original, which is a song I love.

  15. Pre-listening I anticipated I'd be voting for The Deftones. And I liked their version at first. And then as it went on (and on) not so much. I realize this is a song that doesn't really do peaks and valleys. Plus, I've never been a big fan of reggae music (I know, don't tell anyone!) so I didn't think Ziggy Marley's version would appeal to me much. Turns out, I was wrong.

I pretty well enjoyed Ziggy's version all the way through. It, too, could've ended a bit sooner. (I ADORE 80s music, but have you noticed how repetitive the songs can get at the end? I noticed when I started singing karaoke.)

Anyway, give my surprised vote to Ziggy Marley.

Really good battle, Holli. So glad you're playing along again!

    1. I am with you for sure. There is a large handful of songs that could be cut short at the end if it was up to me.
I have your vote with Ziggy. I like a lot of his stuff but not typically a large reggae listener in total.
Thank you , it feels good to be back ( semi).
