Thursday Tunes

Hey guys,  I don't have much time to really have a long post today but thought I'd post a song that's been playing in my head.
Peace Train was originally done by Cat Stevens in early 70's but was remade by Natalie Merchant of the 10,000 maniacs in the 90's.  I love both versions.
The words are great and wished we could all truly head in this direction and jump on the Peace Train.

Have a great Thursday!

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. What summer activity most takes you back to your own childhood? Probably jumping thru the sprinklers in our back yard. We didn’t have a pool and my cousins and I would go to my grandma’s house and would play hours outside running and jumping through the sprinklers. It was so much fun! We also had a slip n slide and wore that out as well.

2. What's your favorite summer smell? Hmmm, Probably the smell of suntan lotion. The coconut-lemon smell will automatically take you to memories of the beach or swimming pool.

  3. It's beach season in the US of how do you feel about sand? I don’t mind the sand. In fact, I dream of having my toes in the sand right about now. When I travel anywhere there is a beach, I have my own tradition that I have to put my feet in the sand. Even if its winter.

  4. Sun tea, SunChips, sunflower seeds, Capri Sun, Sunny Delight, Sun-Maid raisins, sun-dried tomatoes...your favorite food or beverage with sun in its name? Sunflower seeds and then sunchips. I really love the unshelled sunflower seeds. I eat them quite a bit

. 5. What's your favorite way to cool off on a hot summer day? The older I get, the heat really gives me headaches and I am more sensitive to the sun. I enjoy air-conditioned cool rooms with cold frozen beverages

. 6. Share a favorite song with the word sun or sunshine in it's title.
First one that comes to mind is Here comes the sun by the Beatles and then my childhood song- You are my Sunshine, My only Sunshine, You make me happy when skies are gray….
7. Tell us about a time you had an exceedingly good or truly awful customer service experience. If it was awful, did you report it? Ever go back there again? I’ve had a few awful experiences with customer service but I didn’t report them. I probably should have. I was in Pennsylvania on business with 3 other coworkers and we stopped at this restaurant we had seen that had cars in parking lot so we figured it might be good. They were terribly understaffed. The hostess sat us quickly but then our waitress never showed up for another 15 minutes. I got up asked the manager if we had a waitress assigned to our table- the waitress came over and Literally yelled at us. She said we are very busy and its not going to do you any good to tell the manager! I cant tell you how I fumed over this for days. I new I would never go back because I don’t live there but I never wanted to slap a waitress before until then.
  8. Insert your own random thought here. So this week I began my training to the other company we’re merging with ( the enemy). I’ve been so busy preparing and training that the blog posts are not happening this week. I got to office extra early today so I can at least post to the hodgepodge link. I love it! I hope to maybe post tomorrow or Friday though.  Have  a great day y'all!

Hodgepodging it today

1. Since you weren't Hodgepodging last Wednesday, how did you pass the time? I still actually posted. I made it a goal to post more than once and I ended up posting 3 times last week.

 2. What's the first word that comes to mind when I say marriage? Yes, one word. Forever

 3. Summer officially arrives in the Northern hemishpere later this week. Does it feel like summer where you live? Describe your idea of the perfect summer day. It started feeling like summer back in the spring. Dallas, Tx is always sweltering hot! My perfect summer day would be near a beach with a light breeze blowing and a frozen drink in my hand, on lawn chair reading a book.

 4. "Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability."(Sam Keen) Is laziness ever respectable? Do you have a lazy summer planned, or something semi-ambitious? Being lazy is not a good quality unless its planned. There is nothing wrong with decompressing and relaxing on a planned vacation day or even a quiet Sunday after church at home spending time with the husband. I am so crazy busy at work that I need to plan a lazy summer for sure. Instead, we are going to try to make it to Montana in September to see my mom.

 5. Past or present, who's your favorite television dad? Why is he a favorite? Is he anything like your own dad? Herman Munster. He always had best intentions for his family but he was also goofy and had fun sense of humor. That is definitely like my dad!! Daddy is a prankster and always playing jokes. At the end of the day though he is a great Dad and will be there for you in a heartbeat!

 6. June 18th is International Picnic Day...share a favorite picnic memory. Well, its been a very long time since I have been on a picnic. I even have the cutest picnic basket I need to use. I went on a few picnic dates long long time ago and they were actually pretty fun. My favorite is when we packed a basket with grapes, cheese, crackers and some salami and climbed on the top of an old train car looking over downtown Dallas.

 7. The travel site Trip Advisor lists the top five islands in the world for 2014 as- Ambergris Caye in Belize Cayes, Providenciales in Turks and Caicos, Bora Bora in French Polynesia, Marco Island Florida, and Lewis and Harris in The Outer Hebrides (Scotland). Have you been to any of these? Of those listed (and if price were not a factor) which would you most like to book for a holiday? I have been to Marco Island in Florida and its is beautiful! If money was no object, I would love to go to Bora Bora. I’ve always wanted to see those crystal blue waters and stay in a hut that is above the water. We’ve all seen those pictures that are used for computer backgrounds. lol

 8. Insert your own random thought here. I have so much randomness going on in my head right now , its hard to pinpoint one. The house is starting to come together. I bought a mattress off Craigslist last week for the guest room. I need to tackle that room this week and then I will feel pretty much complete in the home. This week at work is kind of the calm before the storm. I have to train 457 customer service reps next week who is with the other company that we are merging with. Did I mention to yall that we are literally merging with our greatest NEMESIS!!! For all 19 years I’ve been with the company, they have been our neck to neck competitor. Its hard to wrap my head around merging with the enemy. LOL!! Oh well, the plus side is that we had several people go work for them when they left us so I will see them again. I guess I had something to say after all on my random thought. Haha!

Have a great day today would you please!

I have DadS.......

So its Monday already. How did we let that happen so fast? With Fathers’ Day being yesterday, I thought I would say a little something about my Dad’s. First of all I have my main Daddy-O, King Daddy, Dad (Mark) whose name is on my birth certificate. Daddy is the one that underwent a DOUBLE LUNG TRANSPLANT last year and is doing great. To start from the beginning, lets just say that I was a Total OOPS baby! My parents were 17 and 18 and their senior year of high school when they found out Mom was pregnant with me. Nine months later, my mom had turned 18 during the pregnancy and Dad was 19. They actually didn’t get married until I was almost born. This was during the late 60’s. They did their best while only being kids themselves but they divorced when I was 4. My mom was very laid back hippie-chick and basically told Daddy that she wasn’t going to make him pay child support since he didn’t have a solid job back then. She knew that my grandparents would help her out in raising me which is what happened. The divorce arrangement was that Mom would take care of me and all things the first part of my life, Daddy only had to pay for braces and a car when I got my license and help out once I got into college. My parents are not the best of friends but they can also be cordial to each other for weddings , funerals, etc. Everyone gets along and that’s all I can ask for. We were supposed to have dinner last night but Daddy wasn’t feeling good and I told him to stay home and in bed and we will try next weekend.

When I was 13 my mom married my stepdad Don. He was the most amazing patient loving step father anyone could ask for. Don truly loves me as his own and treated me as such while I was in high school and college. He currently lives in Oklahoma to be near my brother and they are the tightest father/son duo you will ever see. Right now my sweet stepdad is suffering with some very serious health issues. Don wasn’t even able to make my wedding and I know we would have NEVER missed it if it wasn’t serious. I love him so much and I have been so blessed to have him in my life. One of my most fondest memories was when we would push the furniture back on Friday nights, and we would pick out songs we wanted to hear from his huge selection of albums, and then we would dance around the house. I loved watching him dance with Mom and then he would teach me the Texas 2-step, waltz, cotton eyed joe, etc. ALL of which are mandatory if you’re a country girl here in Texas.

I cant not mention my grandpa Poppy! I mention him a lot and its because he was so influential and instrumental in my life. Poppy wasn’t supposed to have favorites when you have grandchildren but it was no secret, I was his partner in crime. I went everywhere with him and I grew up feeling loved and special and that I had someone in my court at all times. He always stood up for me and bragged about me to his friends every chance he could. His friends would say “where’s your passenger” when I didn’t come along on the Harley the rare times I couldn’t go with him. I cry every Fathers’ Day from missing him so much.

I love it that I now can say I have a Father n law. I absolutely adore my inlaws and I get along so well with both of them. My father n law Bob , is so funny and has the best sense of humor. Yesterday after church, we met them for lunch and my brother n law joined us. Bob is a great listener and looks me in the eye when we talk. I can see where my husband gets his wit from.
I’m so very Blessed to have a few Dad’s who love me and contributed to who I am today. Have a great day y’all!!!

My wine lounge so far

Hey there! I'm starting to feel good about the house being put together finally.  We have a living room and we also have a den/ formal room at front of house. We are going to use it as our library - wine lounge.  Here's what I've done so far on one wall:

Once I have it more put together , I'll show y'all more pictures.

I'm joining a girlfriend in Ft. Worth on Saturday to crash her garage sale.  I have  so many boxes to take over there that I hope it all fits in my truck.
With whatever money I make, I'm putting it towards an outdoor shed that we like at Home Depot.  If I can get that soon, we can clean out the garage and then maybe actually park in it. What? Crazy I know!
So that's the exciting plan I have for my weekend. What fun thing do you have going on?

Stronger than my fear

Ok so it's already Wednesday and this is my 2nd post of the week.  I had intentions of posting yesterday but I got pretty busy at work.  I've got so much on my mind right now that I get a little frozen and not sure what move to make next.
I am struggling with something right now that I'm not comfortable sharing on my blog.  I will say that it's made me fearful and I'm not comfortable with that feeling.
My old catholic schooling kicks in and I've said the Our Father and Hail Mary prayers at least a couple of hundred times this past few weeks.
My faith is strong. I am disappointed that I've allowed myself to be scared. I've found these quotes and scriptures to help remind me that I'm not alone.

I hope you have a very good day and if you believe in prayer, I could use a prayer for peace and strength and no more fear.
Thanks y'all!  XO. Holli

We were drawn from the weeds...

Good morning y'all! Happy Monday to you on this dark rainy gloomy day here in Dallas.  We soooo need the rain though. How was your weekend?  I unpacked A LOT and starting to see a light at end of the tunnel finally. I have one guest room that is pretty scary but it's not priority. I can close the door if anyone comes over.
I drove out to Quitman on Saturday where Nanny (grandma )  lives and it's 2 hrs one way.  We had such a great day! I left early and got there around 10:30 am. We went to a  a little hole in the wall and had a delicious country breakfast before we went to the grocery store. Nanny does not have a car  or a drivers license so one of us normally takes her so she can be stocked up.
After we put away the groceries, we headed towards Lindale so I could go back to the Pink Pistol that's owned by Miranda Lambert.  I knew something was off when we got closer and no cars were there. Unfortunately, they had sign on door that they closed at 1pm just for that day.  I bet money that it was due to high school graduations.  I was bummed because I really really wanted to buy a skirt that I can't get out of my mind.
On our way back to Nannys we stopped at a little flea market and I bought a cute little rolling cart and 2 mannequin heads that came from a beauty school. I will be using them for my Halloween party. LOL
The highways were gorgeous out in East Texas.

Sunday, I came home from church determined to get our master bedroom complete. Todd went to his office to paint  his lobby so I buckled down and got to work.  Jax is so funny because he loves to be held. He was so needy and would jump up on my legs so I can pick him up. He's actually pretty heavy when you're holding him with one arm and unpacking, sorting and cleaning with the other arm.
I need to get one of those baby holders that I can put him in and carry him around.

I came across one of my projects I bought recently, and changed it around.
I had bought a summer dress that would not have fit me in the bust but would make a great skirt. I cut the whole top portion off and Wallah! I have a cute skirt.
These are really not good pictures but notice the shoulder straps and the top bodice are missing from the photo on right.
It's been a blah day but Ive been busy at work. Hence the late time of day I'm posting.
Here are some cute pics of Jax that brighten my day.
He's using his toy as a pillow. Heehee

I want to post more then once this week so let's see......
Have a great rest of your day.

Memory triggers- flashbacks

I'm sitting here at work snacking on some smoked almonds and it's funny how a smell, taste , sound or sight can immediately take you to back in time to memory. Just silly but tasty almonds took me to Georgetown, Colorado when I was  7 or 8 yrs old, to the Red Ram Inn with my daddy.  My dad lived there for a few years and that was my first flight on an airplane from Dallas to Denver and I flew alone. Back then , you would have a flight attendant assigned to you to board with you and to see you off the plane. Dads friend was the bartender at Red Ram and we were there often to eat dinner. Hey we're talking the 70's and a single dad.  Anyways, they had a dispenser on the bar that was filled with the smoked almonds. For a quarter, you would get a hand full of almonds. I was the official almond getter once I discovered this.  I never in my life ate so many smoked almonds in a months time.
I will ALWAYS associate smoked almonds with the Red Ram.

Funny side note: my mom ended up living in Georgetown 20 years later for a short time.  Both parents living in the same small town at different times is so weird to me.

When mom was pregnant with my little brother Jeremy, she craved ice cream floats made with strawberry crush soda.  It HAD to be Crush brand and my sweet grandpa would drop off cases of the soda every week for her.  So now I can't see a can of Crush ( orange, grape, etc) without thinking of mom pouring it over bluebell vanilla ice cream.

The little creamer packets that you see jn a bowl at IHOP or Denny's , those take me to a time my Poppy let me open up at least a dozen of those at a small cafe and drink the cream from them. I was really young then probably around 6 or 7. My sweet grandpa spoiled me just a little.

To this day I am not a fan of whipped cream or cool whip from a bowl or can.  Again I was just a little girl and my great aunt was babysitting me. She let me eat cool whip out of the bowl and then also spray the whipped cream in my mouth from a can. I got soooo sick and have avoided it ever since.

Corny dogs take me to our Texas State Fair and it has to be Fletcher's .

There are many many many more examples of my transports in time but I only time right now to name these few.

Do you have any specific vivid memories that something like an almond takes you to?

Wednesday's Hodgepodge

1. I've read several posts and status updates recently describing end of year school field trips. Do you remember taking school field trips as a kid? Where did you go and do you recall a favorite? For any parents responding today, have you ever chaperoned a school field trip, and if so where? I remember going to the Dallas zoo when I was in elementary, and to a very cool Spanish Missions when I was in junior high and attended catholic school in Coronado, Ca., in high school we went on trip to Austin and visited the Capital and LBJ library.
 2. What's something you're tired of seeing online? I can tell you that I am so tired of tons of my facebook connections do nothing but sell stuff- MaryKay, Pampered Ched, Scentsy, Plexus, you name it! They never post about themselves or family, etc. Just buy my crap over and over. HAHA- can you tell it annoys me?
 3. June is the month for roses. Which of the following expressions would you say has most recently applied to your life-'everything's coming up roses', 'there's no rose without a thorn', 'came out smelling like a rose', or 'wearing rose-colored glasses'? I will go with No rose without a thorn. The move is a rose to have a house, backyard, and closer to work, but as mentioned the last few weeks, lots of thorns popped up.
 4. When grilling outdoors do you prefer gas or charcoal? Who does the grilling at your house? What's the last thing you ate that was cooked on a grill? I like charcoal but we have gas grill and my hubby does the grilling.
 5. Are you afraid of the dark? Nope. I was always in the lead with my friends hiding behind me when we played Hide and seek outside.
 6. Share a favorite song with a number in it's title. – Hmm, there were lots from the 80’s and I am total 80’s girl!! Here are a few that I liked: Edge of Seventeen ( Stevie Nicks –my fave), Its not in the title but everyone knows 867-5309 (Jenny), 1999 by Prince, I cant drive 55 (Sammy Hagar), Summer of 69 ( Bryan Adams).
 7. "Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves."(C.G. Jung). Do you agree? Why or why not? I do agree. I’ve always believed that the very things you like about a person can be the things that drives you crazy about them. My example is that Hubby always loved my brutal honesty and non-sugarcoating and now that we’re married, he said he’s not a fan of it so much. Hmm.
 8. Insert your own random thought here. I really am not ready to give up blogging but I have lacked either time, topics, or energy to truly blog lately. Next week, Joyce will be on a break so there wont be a Hodgepodge. I’m challenging myself to blog at least twice next week. In other news- PRAISE GOD for insurance because I have my second diamond from jewelry store. They sent my ring off and matched it as close as possible to my lost diamond. No extra fees at all. It’s the same but different. No 2 diamonds are the same so I cant expect for it to be exact. The prongs are different this time and it looks as if it doesn’t sit up as high. Oh well, I’m beyond grateful and its still beautiful for sure!
Thank you so much for sticking with me during my slow moments.
Jax is loving his back yard. He has a stick  in his mouth. Any one else's dog likes to eat sticks and pull bark off trees?
